The Three R’s: How CBD Is Helping Our Dogs #ad

A CBD treat review

A CBD treat review- #sponsored

Relaxing, repairing and restoring – is this too good to be true? Naturally occurring phytocannabinoids (CBD) are important for the overall health of dogs, cats,  humans, rabbits and all animals. And the use of CBD products with our animals help address these three R’s.

Treatibles sent me a bag of the large treats for dogs over 50 lbs in the pumpkin flavor to try with Walter as he’s reactive on leash.

It has 4mg of CBD per chew. The suggested serving is 1 treatible per 40 lbs. Walter is about 30 lbs and after talking to Treatibles about his reactivity I’ve been giving him one large treat per day before dinner and our evening walk.

Did it work? The short answer is yes!

  • For Walter it takes the edge off!
  • Given how well it works – yes, he still “reacts” but he’s not as intense and the barking has decreased – that I’d like to try the CBD oil as I think it may work as well as the treats and perhaps even better!
  • I’m kicking myself for not considering CBD for July 4 – since fireworks are such an issue here, I’ll be using the oil with both Walter and Shermie moving forward for these types of noisy holidays

What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds present in both animals and in the plant genus cannabis, which includes both hemp and marijuana. The two most widely recognizable cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD),  which has a wide range of therapeutic applications, and THC, which is the psychoactive component found in cannabis and used in medical marijuana.

How do Phytocannabinoids Work in the Body?

All animals have an endocannabinoid system that assists in maintaining the physiological, neurological and immunological systems of the body. If there is a deficiency of endocannabinoid production, the system’s multiple receptors will utilize the addition of phytocannabinoids to help create balance and provide support for relaxing, repairing or restoring. Naturally occurring phytocannabinoids are important for the overall health of dogs, cats,  humans, rabbits and all animals.

Dogs are especially responsive to phytocannabinoids as they have the highest concentration of  cannabinoid receptors in their brains and bodies compared to other animals, including humans.

According to their Communications Director, Jodi Ziskin,Treatibles works holistically, meaning that the whole pet experiences the benefits. The body’s endocannabinoid system will utilize the phytocannabinoids as needed. A dog with mobility issues enjoying Treatibles may experience repairing, but also feel more relaxed, calm and balanced. A dog with anxiety who also has digestion issues may also experience a reduction in inflammation helping to restore digestive balance.”

Question for Treatibles: When are the new flavors available? Are the Tater’s Sweet Potato Tots the only flavor currently available?

Adds Ziskin, “Our new line of grain-free hard chews, which includes newly formulated pumpkin, blueberry, turkey and the very special Tater’s Sweet Potato Tots, will all be available by mid-August. Currently, the Tater’s Sweet Potato Tots can be purchased through Treatibles.com and will be on store shelves along with the other flavors in mid-August.”

Also on the radar for Treatibles!

Treatibles has partnered with Villalobos Rescue Center (you may recognize the Rescue from an animal focused network’s hit show about rehabilitating Pit Bulls and people)  to introduce Tater’s Sweet Potato Tots by Treatibles, a new grain free chew  that will benefit the New Orleans-based Rescue. One dollar from each bag sold will be donated to help cover veterinary expenses at Villalobos Rescue Center, whose annual veterinary costs average $500K.

Just found your blog. Great stuff! Love to learn about alternative treatments. And yet another use for cannabis. Who knew?
Have you discovered the magazine ‘What Doctors Don’t Tell You’? (www.wddty.com).
Although it’s a ‘people’ magazine, it does contain articles about treating pets by alternative methods–always at least one article every month.

    • Thank you! Appreciate your kind words- I’m kind of blown away by all the CBD products so will continue to review different brands to see what works best – thanks for the head’s up, I’ve never heard of this magazine and will certainly check it out this week.

We use CBD oil to help with travel anxiety as well as a supplement tool in the arsenal for managing Elsa’s epilepsy. It’s an amazing product and I couldn’t be happier with the results. We’re hoping we can reduce the amount of phenobarb doses down the road. And for anxiety, this is of such help, it’s remarkable. My other dog loves the idea of riding in the car but as soon as the key is turned, he freaks out. With a few drops on a treat, he is calm and not hyperventilating. Good luck with Walter.

    • WOW. It also works with epilepsy? I’m SO happy you commented – I’m using it now with old Bruisy as I think there are a number of ways he could benefit but slowly introducing the oil – if you can reduce the amount of phenobarb that would be incredible. Thanks so much for this – and I’ll do another post for sure in a few months after the oil has really taken effect. Appreciate your note.

This sounds amazing. I wonder if this would help Sophie on car rides. She really doesn’t enjoy them at all, and consequently, I don’t really like taking her places by car.

    • You know – I’m trying a drop of the oil with Bruisy working up to the 1/2 dropper they say is ok for dogs up to 25 lbs. I know Sarcastic Dog used if for car ride issues and it worked really well! You should try it for sure – I was really impressed with the treats… I think the oil will have an even better impact!

  4. Have you noticed whether or not it helps with Bruisy’s arthritis? Jen – over at My Brown Newfies – seems to think it’s helping with her Sherman’s arthritis. Before I talk to our “old school” vet about trying it for Shadow, I’d really like some extra feedback. She’s also on Denamarin for her liver function issues, so I wonder if CBD would cause adverse interactions. All things I need to look into before broaching the subject with the vet.

    • Hi! I don’t think I’ve been using the CBD oil long enough to give you a real picture on arthritis yet. Anxiety though – yes! It helps with Bruiser’s anxiety at night when he’s anxious about medications and food – it’s making a tangible difference. That’s right- we were in that FB thread about the Denamarin – from what I understand it actually helps the medications on board work better in some cases. After you talk to your vet would you mind closing the loop here as I’d like to know what he/she says for sure. Thanks!

We are currently trying these. Any benefits we’ve seen so far have been subtle, not enough to be sure . I had high hopes for it helping Luke’s anxiety, so we will continue to try. One thing I like is that you don’t have to worry about giving too much…so we increase by 1/2 treat each day to see what might work.
I’m hoping they will benefit Cricket’s arthritis too. It’s tough to judge that right now since she has some other stuff going on, and it’s been hot.

    • I’m still keeping Brui on the CBD oil twice a day to see if it helps with mobility – I actually think it’s making him too hungry so I may go back to evening doses only. I wanted to see if it helped with his mobility – AND please let me know how Luke does moving forward as I haven’t tried the oil yet with Walter but the treats were successful and I’m hoping the oil will really help with anxiety. Since it’s so $$$ I wanted to start with Bruisy and if I see some improvement I’ll try with the others. I agree that it’s tough to judge as Bruisy is on other medication too so it’s hard to say the oil is helping when there are so many factors…. another reason to try with Walter since he’s not on anything currently. Have you considered the oil at all?
