A recipe for not getting bit by my old doxie during the holidays!

(Just a gobble gobble post for those of you that live with dogs that don’t love guests and company during the holidays!)

This is dedicated to my old dog Bruiser, this morning my husband and I talked about the guests we’ll have in our house this week and how to set Bruiser up for success.

Ingredients: *I think typically the highest volume ingredients go first?

  • Bruiser approved treats (think steak, meat balls, rotisserie chicken….) (2 cups)
  • Distance: proximity is key so think about the length of a leash
  • Zero eye contact: which makes him feel threatened
  • A little love but not too much: he knows when it’s fake, he’s really smart (the love measurement = you saw a picture of a dog doing something cute but not the way you feel if you saw a puppy/kitten)
  • Giving more attention to Bruiser than any other dogs or humans – not sure how to measure this ingredient, it’s like a pinch. You need to give him just the right amount of attention.

Directions:

Set him up for success.

Present at least one cup of the approved treats in front of him and then walk away providing some (but not too much) distance. Make sure he’s eating the treats before you move onto love and attention. Love and attention can be as simple as sitting in the room and giving more treats while telling Bruiser how awesome he is.  He prefers to be called rock star, or you can let him know that he looks like a dog version of Brad Pitt and things like “the best dog ever” typically work.

Repeat this as often as necessary – may take the entire holiday. Good luck.
