Skin and Coat Care: A Shampoo Recommendation
How to Care For Your Dog’s Coat: A Shampoo Review
Do you have a dog with dry or flaky skin? Are you struggling with just finding a good shampoo with natural ingredients? I found one that I really like.
As a CVT, I learned that it’s not necessary to bathe your dog all the time. Some of those oils on their coat are important and using a baby wipe can be a great solution when a bath isn’t necessary. However, when it’s time to bathe, here are some tips on how to best care for your dog’s skin and coat.
According to an article in Animal Wellness,
- Find a shampoo that gently cleans without stripping the coat’s natural sedum. A good, basic all-purpose dog shampoo should be pH balanced for the coat, made with natural and organic ingredients, have low lather and smell great. Look for shampoos that use essential oils.
- Read the ingredients first!
- Lavender and calendula calm and soothe the skin.
Four out of Five stars:
I reviewed a line I hadn’t heard of called RELIQ. It’s a mineral based shampoo and I immediately liked the ingredients.
According to a RELIQ press release, “The secret behind the entire RELIQ line is a special mineral found in volcanic regions that breaks through bonds of odor molecules and dissolves them upon contact. RELIQ’s safe and tear-free formula allows essential nutrients and botanical extracts to be broken down and absorbed into the skin and coat where they moisturize, soften and condition.”
RELIQ Shampoo Review:
Walter’s coat looked beautiful after his bath. He has a very short coat – and is constantly in the mud and bushes in the yard. He’s not itchy like his brother Shermie so I tried the Lavendar and Green Tea Shampoos. I typically use the same shampoo on Walter and Bruiser that I use on Shermie when technically these guys don’t need a special shampoo for yeasty skin as they don’t have the same coat issues Sherm does. I use Dr.Shawn’s on Sherm and wrote a review about that line awhile back.
I liked how RELIQ’s Shampoo wasn’t overly “sudsy”. I think immediately of the chemicals needed to make those suds and I’m not a big fan- I think shampoo should feel more like a cream rinse.
The smell of the Lavendar shampoo was delicious and it lasted for days after shampooing him. What I loved is that the smell wasn’t overwhelming. The Shampoos come in six different scents. If you have a dog that doesn’t have skin and coat issues (and needs something medicated) and just needs a shampoo for a healthy coat, I’d highly recommend trying RELIQ. Their social channels also have some additional information about their line.

What is this shampoo made of?
I also learned from RELIQ that their solutions are 100 percent chlorine, alcohol and paraben-free making them great for any breed dog, regardless of their skin or coat type. “RELIQ Mineral Spa Shampoos are pH balanced and low sudsing for easy rinsing and limited water consumption, so they’re not harmful to the environment. Each bottle is packed with nutrients including Vitamin E and Pro-Vitamin B5 along with Olive Oil PEG-7 for superb conditioning,” according to RELIQ.
Ingredients for both are:
Green Tea
Purified water, Coconut-based natural surfactant, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Volcanic minerals, Vitamin E, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Olive oil PEG 7 emollient, Natural soy extract deodorant, Green tea essential oil, Bergamot oil, White tea leaf extract, Calendula officinalis flower extract, Horehound extract, Scutellaria extract, Citric acid.
Lavendar
Purified water, Coconut-based natural surfactant, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Sodium coco-glucoside tartrate, Volcanic minerals, Vitamin E, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Olive oil PEG 7 emollient, Natural soy extract deodorant, Lavender oil, Tea tree leaf oil, Eucalyptus oil, Calendula officinalis flower extract, Citric acid.

That looks like a good shampoo. I’ll have to give it a true with Ted.
Thank you! I think it’s a really good line to try.
A great sounding shampoo! We really look for good hair/fur-care products since we have long-haired Shih Tzus! We often rely on lavender and calendula, so will check out this product!
I liked the Lavendar shampoo a lot and I use Calendula on skin wounds so I also thought that was a crucial ingredient!
It’s great when you can find a shampoo that works well for your dog.
Agreed! It was nice to find a new line.
These look great! I’ll be reviewing this product in a couple of months! Can’t wait! 🙂
You’ll love the line! There is a lot to choose from 🙂
These sound like great shampoos! Love the ingredients list. Glad they worked well for Walter!
Thanks! Walter is indeed a fan!
I am going to check it out as Layla is Ms. Allergy and I have tried so many poor thing, thanks 🙂
Allergies are so difficult. Check out this line and Dr. Shawn’s as I find that to work well for Sherm.
That looks like a great shampoo, we love anything lavender!
It smells awesome!
Glad you found something that works for Walter! We have a serious shampoo stockpile right now lol.
I love that – and they don’t get bathed a lot either so it takes awhile to get through it all!
We use a natural shampoo for the cats – although essential oils can be toxic, I’m guessing this doesn’t present the same issue for dogs.
I use many essential oils for various health related issues with the dogs, definitely different than cats!
We love RELIQ! Its my new favorite shampoo I used the Jasmine on Goose and it was like aroma therapy for me and im sure for him, it smelled so nice.
Oh I’d like to try the Jasmine!
This is a new brand to me. I love using lavender on Bentley and Pierre. ♥
Check it out and see what you think!
This sounds like it worth checking out.
Definitely!
This sounds like a great product. I’m always looking for a good shampoo and conditioner for Rosa, her skin is so dry and itchy. I’ll certainly give this a try, I like how they left out all the icky ingredients!
I also really liked the ingredients in this line!
What a great review…the ingredients sound great!
Thank you!
Really great review. Sounds like a great shampoo. Ruby has lots of itchy, dry skin so this might work well for her.
yes, Walter doesn’t have itchy skin but I bet the Lavendar and Calendula shampoo would help but I would also look at Dr. Shawn’s line for itchy conditions too.
I will definitely try this brand on Henry and Reese. Thanks for sharing your review.
Absolutely, let me know what you think.
Dry skin can be such a bother! I can’t imagine how irritating it has to be to our pets, who cannot speak up about it. This sounds like a great shampoo for dogs! My cats have been very itchy this winter, so I imagine that a lot of dogs have been too.
I think dogs are also having issues – we have the opposite problem as it rains all the time so my dogs are yeasty!
We forget that their skin can be just as sensitive or more than ours! Great read.
Thank you! This line is a good one for sensitive skin and coats!
I’m a big believer in gentle, all natural Pet products.
Love & biscuits,
Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them
Thanks! Check out all the aromas – and limited ingredients which I liked.
Sounds like a great shampoo for those dogs who need baths more frequently.
Thanks! I’m still a fan of baby wipes!
Hey, this sounds like a good new-to-me line of shampoos! This seems to be an itchy time of year according to the comments, and I know Kiki is scratching more lately, but it’s so cold I can’t bathe her. Do you know if this company makes any wipes or dry shampoo? Thanks for the introduction =)
I really like their pomegranate soap!
We really liked the Lavendar – and I think this weekend we’re going to need more baths for Sherm. He’s itchy! 🙂 Hope Nola is feeling better today. Bruiser had a fractured tooth that was removed so I totally get it… those little doxies!!
Bentley is having some seasonal itching and we are giving him soothing baths. I’d love to try some Reliq. It’s going on the Christmas list!
Thanks! We loved reviewing Reliq and think the line has some awesome shampoos with great essential oils and yummy ingredients!
We like the jasmine!
Us too!! And now with the rain back — we are ready for some bathing!
