Toppers For Your Dog’s Food

When choosing toppers for your dog’s meal, you need to be creative.

Fresh food

Fresh food can be ordered from brands like Farmer’s Dog and used as a topper rather than a meal. You can also use something as simple as boiled chicken!

Elevate Pet Provisions has a topper my dogs love, and I’m using it on every meal. I literally ate some of it myself before using it on Herschel’s kibble. It’s made with high-quality beef from the U.S. and 100% Human Grade Air Dried Beef. The topper also has sweet potatoes, apples, and green beans. You can sprinkle it on or use a spoonful. I’ve been adding it to their bowls before I add kibble and then on top, along with Farmer’s Dog. (I’m writing a separate blog post on the topper as it’s a huge win for our dogs when it comes to meals).

Veggies

Carrots, broccoli, and pumpkin are all great options. Canned pumpkin can also be used, but first, make sure your dog enjoys the topper so you don’t “ruin” their kibble or regular diet.

Protein

I mentioned chicken, but you can also add pork, turkey, or beef, which is a delicious way to make your dog’s food more exciting and palatable.

Freeze-dried food

Stella and Chewy make a great freeze-dried topper that we use with almost every meal. We switch between chicken and turkey. It easily crumbles and the dogs love this as an easy topper.

Stews or gravy’s

The only true experience we have with a stew is Hill’s Animal Biome canned food which Walter loves. He actually eats the kibble so it’s a great addition to his diet and less calories. It comes in a stew-like texture but canned options are also great.

Greens (different than veggies-mashed)

Greens are more like the products we’ve used, which are from a brand, Green Juju. There is actually a variety of their products sold at most smaller, independent pet stores. They carry a greens blend and whole food meals. Green Juju is always a hit with our doggos.

Pour overs

When I thought these two needed a little variety, I used Honest Kitchen’s pour-overs. These are a thicker consistency and ideal for colder months. They come in a few different flavors and I ordered them off of Chewy.

Dogs need variety in their diets just like we do! No one wants to eat the same thing for months on end, but if your dog is on a special diet like ours, then we do what we can to mix it up! What are you using as a topper? What did we miss?
