Animal Tattoos: Top Five Reasons to Get One or Two!

Top Five Reasons to Get an Animal Tattoo

  1. Put this on your bucket list: This has been on my Bucket list! I have been dreaming about a tattoo of my dogs for many years. I approached an amazing tattoo artist at Wonderland Tattoo (in PDX) and Savannah Trevino took on my “project”. I literally met with her for a consult and she came up with the concept and design. I didn’t get to see it until the morning of the appointment. It was like Christmas!
  2. Crazy dog lady: I cannot think of a better way to celebrate your life with dogs. You don’t have to get a half sleeve like I did. I wanted to start big but you can simply get a smaller tattoo perhaps somewhere that isn’t exposed to the world.
  3. Milestones: I’m almost 45 years-old: Why wait? I’m getting older and older and time is starting to go faster and faster. Byt, of course, do your research. I spent a lot of time going through Instagram deciding the style I wanted and which artist I thought would best capture it.
  4. Badassery: I’m older so I don’t feel like a bad ass with my tattoo but I feel like it makes a statement about what is important in my life and I’m embracing this through body art.
  5. You’re obsessed with your animals: Lately with the world a little bit of a hot mess, I prefer my dogs over some people. Yes, I said that out loud.

Thank you, Savannah!

That tattoo is GORGEOUS! I have one on my inner left arm and I love it. It’s flowers and three paw prints for dogs in my past, dogs in my present, and dogs in my future. I was barely able to sit through this tattoo – I’m blown away by what you have on your arm.

    So cool! I’m so jealous.

    • Oh, thank you so much! I want to see pics of yours as it sounds so awesome! Honestly, I had to break that up into two sessions! As soon as those endorphins ran out I was like…. um how much color are we adding? lol. I really appreciate your note – now one of my dogs is missing as we had to pick and choose so I’ll have to come up with another design for the other arm for next year. I got the stink eye immediately and felt terrible. Too many dogs!

Wow, I love this so much! Your artist did an amazing job. I got Ruby on my right arm last summer and it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. I’m glad I waited until 40 but now I’m just getting g started. I have another piece scheduled for March.

    • Thank you! I’m so WITH YOU! I’m almost 45 and now I want to cover both arms with dog-related designs. I’m going over to your blog to refresh my memory on what yours looks like! I think it’s so great that we both got these in our 40s and it’s also one of the most favorite things I’ve ever done. Why did we wait so long? 🙂 What are you doing in March??

      • I’ll be getting a Dia de los Muertos style horse skull on my thigh in March. It is going to be quite large and scheduled for four hours!

        • That sounds amazing. My first session was short of four hours. I cannot wait to see your pictures. I LOVE Dia de los Muertos tattoos. Do you already have the design? You must be SO fired up… it’s like Christmas, right??

          • My artist was named one of the top tattoo artists in Denver and became very in-demand – for the first one I had to wait months for the consult and then another six months for the work. It seemed like forever! This time, as an existing client, the process is shorter, but it is SO exciting! I gave her the design I wanted, with the instruction to take her own liberties with it, and I won’t see it until the appointment. That’s how she works and I was nervous about it with the first one (“what if I hate it?”) but now have total faith in her.

          • It was totally the same process with Savannah -I had to wait and then she told me I wouldn’t see the design until the day of!! I thought the same thing – I can’t walk out, right? What if!! That’s so cool they shorten the process with the second tattoo. And you know you will LOVE the design! My sister is in Littleton, I may message you about where in Denver your artist is at!!! Please post – I’ll remind you as I want to see it!!

  3. Monika & Sam says:

It’s totally spectacular! LOVE the color. I got my ‘tramp’ stamp many years ago but have thought about doing a new one on the inside of my wrist. A tiny heart swirl with a paw print at the end of the design. Time will tell. ❤︎

  4. I have never been a fan of tattoos; BUT yours is a beauty. Kudos to Savannah!

    • Thank you! I was so lucky to find her. She ended up with this awesome design that just felt perfect. 🙂 I appreciate your comment! She has this eye and love for animals and it really came through.

  5. Sandy says:

i just want a little heart on my wrist to remember my oldest gal who passed away in aug. with her name written across it. the dogs are beautiful, but i have never been a tattoo person. just want a little one.

  6. Maggie says:

I LOVE THIS!!! I have an Emmett tattoo on my bucket list, and this is inspiring me to bump it up to the top of the list! 🙂

  7. Jan K says:

That is amazingly beautiful! I’ve always wanted to get a tattoo but have been too chicken. I had figured something simpler if I ever do it, because I can’t see myself sitting still for very long to have that done; plus I don’t think I could pick and choose between all the dogs I’ve had in my life. I’m thinking more of a heart and paw print kind of thing.
Maybe some day I’ll get up the nerve!

    • Thank you so much: My sister’s immediate comment was – where is Bruiser? Isn’t he upset he’s not on your tattoo? So this totally go into my head and now I need another tattoo of Bruiser of course so I’m already brainstorming. Ha! I love the heart and paw print concept and it’s so nice to represent all your animals present and past. Then you don’t need two arm sleeve tattoos because only two/three could fit! 🙂 Appreciate your note!

  8. Lindsay says:

I’m obsessed, this is gorgeous. My husband said to say the same, too. I mean, the outline looked great in itself but adding colour, it’s stunning. 🙂

    • Thank you so much! It’s so funny -after the outline was done – I was fired up! I thought maybe I don’t need color… it was a long appointment. 😉 Then I was super happy I got color – thank you and thank your hubby too for me! Now I need more… ha!

      • Lindsay says:

Oh I bet. Four hours is no joke.
It’s such a vicious cycle, you always want more eh? I think this is the year I’m finally going to get paw prints or something of the sort on my foot. I’ve always wanted a sleeve since I was young but it needs to be thought out….
Yours just looks beautiful, and it really does your dogs justice. That’s my worst fear is getting portraits of them and they end up turning out like garbage, and then it’s on you for good (obviously there’s laser but who wants to do that?).
My problem is, I have all these grand ideas but no idea where I’d put them on my body.

I can’t wait to see your canvas expand. 😉

        • As soon as she finished – I wanted to start an entirely new one. 🙂 Thank you so much for this note – I was nervous to share it but wanted to! She had a lot of pics from my blog done in various illustrations and then it all came together. I feel really lucky I found such a talented artist. To your point – it’s basically forever. 😉 Put them on your back and your foot! I love that idea! Pics when you’re done – you have to promise!

  9. Cathy Armato says:

Wow, Christy you really know how to Go Big or Go Home! This is such a Stunning design, I love it! What a talented artist. Wear it proudly!
